Mikumi or Selous from Zanzibar
Mikumi or Selous (Nyerere) for a day safari from Zanzibar? Size, wildlife, seasons and day format compared, and which park suits which traveller.
Book the Mikumi day safari ↗Quick answer
Pick Mikumi if you want a compact park that stays open all year, with floodplain herds of elephants, giraffes and zebras. Pick Selous, now mostly Nyerere National Park, if you want a far larger park built around the Rufiji River, with wild dogs and the option of a second day. Both day trips are shared 4x4 drives between two flights, and neither can promise lions.

The short answer
For a first one-day safari from Zanzibar both parks work, and the choice rests on three things: how wild you want the setting, how much of the year you travel, and whether you might stretch to two days. Mikumi is compact and open all year. Nyerere is vast and river-led, and its day trip has a two-day option. Guests rate both highly, 4.7 for the Mikumi day and 4.8 for the Selous day on their booking pages, so ratings will not decide it for you. Read the names section first if the labels confuse you, and the seasons section if you travel in the rains, because those two settle most doubts.
Mikumi in brief
Mikumi National Park lies in Morogoro Region and covers about 3,230 square kilometres, the fourth largest national park in Tanzania according to Wikipedia. Tanzania National Parks calls the Mkata floodplain its main wildlife area, and the Tanzania Tourist Board puts the park astride the main highway to Zambia, with mountains around the plain. It is open all year, the dry season from about June to October concentrates wildlife, and the green season suits birdwatching. A road that crosses the park divides it in two. The day trip lands at an airstrip in the park, so the game drive starts soon after you touch down and no long road transfer eats into the day.
Selous and Nyerere: the names
The Selous Game Reserve was named after the hunter and conservationist Frederick Selous, and UNESCO inscribed it as a World Heritage Site in 1982. In 2019 its northern part became Nyerere National Park, named after Tanzania's first president and run by Tanzania National Parks. Wikipedia calls it Tanzania's largest national park. A photographic day from Zanzibar goes to that northern area along the Rufiji River, which is why the booking page for the Selous day says Selous and Nyerere in the same breath. Area figures differ between sources, so treat any single number as approximate.
What Nyerere adds
Tanzania National Parks calls the Rufiji one of East Africa's last great wild river systems and says visitors can take boat safaris past hippos and crocodiles and ranger-led walking safaris with permits. It also highlights the birdlife of the Rufiji's lakes and channels. On the one-day trip the booking page lists a shared game drive; the two-day option adds a bush walk, a Rufiji boat cruise and a night at a lodge.
What Mikumi adds
Mikumi's strength is the open floodplain. Safari Bookings describes large herds of zebra, wildebeest, buffalo and impala, with giraffe and elephant also common, and says predators are less conspicuous but still possible. Wikipedia adds eland, kudu and more than 400 bird species. Tanzania National Parks says wildlife is often seen close to the main circuit, and that game drives focus on the Mkata floodplain, which suits a day that has only hours to spend.
What the two day trips share
Both day trips fly you from Zanzibar in the morning and back in the afternoon, run a shared 4x4 game drive with a driver-guide, serve a bush lunch inside the park, and include the return flight, park entry and landing fees and drinking water. Both carry the same advice to return to Zanzibar no later than 2 nights before your international departure, and the same note that weather or airfield conditions can change the safari between early April and early June.
Seasons and weather
Mikumi is open all year, with the dry season concentrating wildlife around water. The Tanzania Tourist Board says parts of Nyerere close temporarily to game drives between March and May during the long rains, and that June to October is best for wildlife. Add the operator's own caution about April to early June, and a rainy-season trip to Nyerere deserves a question to the operator about how the day will run. Mikumi carries less of that risk.
Where the two bookings differ
The Mikumi day runs 8 to 10 hours with room for up to 100 guests in the standard group, or a private option for up to 20. The Selous day starts at 8 hours, offers private or small groups, adds a coffee or tea break, and sells a two-day option with a bush walk and a boat cruise on full board. Guests on the Selous day describe zebras, giraffes, lions, crocodiles and elephants, and one guest calls the ride bumpy. On both days, the review summaries say some travellers want clearer, earlier updates on pickup and flight timing. A third option, a Mikumi day by twin-engine plane with no more than six guests per jeep, comes from a different operator.
How you reach each park
Both parks are reached by air from Zanzibar, which is the point of the format, and a day trip hides the distance that a road traveller would face. Tanzania National Parks lists scheduled and charter flights to the Mikumi airstrip, and Wikipedia says scheduled flights from Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar to Nyerere take under an hour. By road the picture changes: the Tanzania Tourist Board puts Mikumi 283 kilometres from Dar es Salaam.
Who suits which park
Match the park to what you want from the day rather than to the fare. Four things matter most: the setting you want, the month you travel, your appetite for a second day, and how many people share your vehicle. The points below put the usual cases in order against those four.
- Open-plain herds of elephants, giraffes and zebras: Mikumi.
- A river, hippos and wild dogs as the setting, even on a single day: Nyerere.
- A possible second day with a boat and a walk: the Nyerere two-day option.
- Travel between April and June: lean to Mikumi, which stays open all year.
- The smallest vehicle group: the twin-engine Mikumi day.
Who this isn't for
Neither day suits anyone who needs a guaranteed sighting, anyone with the health conditions the booking pages list, or anyone flying home within two nights. If you can spend a night on the mainland, a lodge stay in either park gives you the dawn and dusk hours that a day trip misses. Comparing two day trips will not change that trade-off, so choose between the parks only after you have decided that one day is enough.
Frequently asked questions
Is Selous the same as Nyerere National Park?
For a flight safari, in practice yes. Nyerere National Park was carved from the northern part of the Selous Game Reserve in 2019, and day trips sold as Selous go to that northern photographic area. The rest of the original reserve keeps its old name.
Which park is bigger, Mikumi or Nyerere?
Nyerere, by a wide margin. Tanzania National Parks puts it above 30,000 square kilometres, while Mikumi covers about 3,230. Size does not decide what one day shows.
Which park has wild dogs?
Nyerere. A day trip cannot promise them.
Which park is better in the rainy season?
Mikumi is open all year, while the Tanzania Tourist Board says parts of Nyerere close temporarily to game drives between March and May. Either day can still change with weather, so ask the operator.
Can I take a boat safari on a day trip?
Not on the one-day Nyerere trip, which is a shared 4x4 drive. A Rufiji boat cruise belongs to the two-day option, together with a bush walk and a night at a lodge.
